A Serious Question and How to Discover Your Higher Purpose

42 Comments | Category: Mindset

Let’s start this off with a little thought experiment.

I want to ask you a question…

But be forewarned, the answer will elucidate exactly how clear your thoughts and actions are towards EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE.

I have one question to ask, and the answer will easily identify the true motives behind what you do, how connected you are to your life goals, and how stress free your day to day life is.

It will shine a light on your level of “spiritual consciousness,” the way you perceive reality, how you view your friends, work, and family, and how much emphasis you put on each.

EVERYTHING you do in life is defined by how you respond to this question, and the resulting thought experiment offers you a new way of living, filled with excitement and happiness.

Are you ready? Ask yourself…

Why are you reading this article?

What brought you to click on that link in your browser? Look at your environment, where are you? What decisions did you make to bring you into that room, into that city or country?  Viewing on your computer or phone, what factors led to your exact life situation right now?

Life can be so engrossing at times, so overwhelming. Too many tasks, following orders, helping others, worries, fears, ambitions, dreams, goals, relationships, it’s easy to disconnect from WHY you actually do anything.

Back to the first question, why are you reading this right now? What are you trying to accomplish?

It might be purely for entertainment, as a parenthesis from the day to day grind of work.

Maybe you’re reading this because of a nebulous thought in the back of your mind. You don’t know what that doubt is, but you feel a lack, and your journey involves searching, hoping that somewhere out there, someone will tell you how to make sense of it all.

Or maybe you know what that doubt is. You want more out of life, have specific goals, and are looking for someone to lead you there. But what drives that focus, that intent? Where did these goals come from? What creates the doubt? What direction is your life heading? How is what you are doing right now, reading this article, leading you in the right direction?

A Higher Purpose

Analyze your day to day thoughts and actions. Drill down, dig deep into your belief structures and values, and try to connect with what really motivates you. What are your true intentions? By perceiving your actions through these deeper levels of meaning, you get closer to the truth, and it allows you to create a more fulfilling life.

As an example, I’ll shine the mirror on myself.

Why am I writing this?

Superficially, I’m writing this because I’m obligated to write a new article once a week to keep visitors coming back to my website.

But if my only motivation in writing this article is from a task oriented paradigm, where is the inspiration?

Let’s dig deeper. I’m writing this to build my brand, to build my business, hoping that somewhere down the line I’ll have a large enough audience to create a successful product.

Now as I sit here nit picking and editing this post, it’s not as monotonous and boring as if I was looking at it purely as a CHORE that needs to be done. Once you zoom out, it gives you perspective and motivation to do all the mundane tasks. There is a larger meaning.

But let’s take another step back. Why do I even care about creating a successful product?

Well, I have a certain lifestyle that I want to live, and financial freedom is part of that. I picture myself writing on the beaches of Thailand or South Africa with a beautiful girl and a stress free lifestyle.

So now, as I write, I know that every hour spent editing this piece into something beautiful, creating a word of mouth buzz, results in more followers and a successful business, which moves me one step closer towards that kick ass lifestyle.

I also just enjoy having a large audience to hear what I have to say. Of course it’s validating to have lots of people comment, Tweet, Facebook like, or share my articles as a sign they enjoyed it. (*ahem*)

I would be lying if I denied ego validation as a motivator. I know the more polished the article, the more likely it is to spread virally, have more people read it, and the more praise that will come my way.

But let’s go one step further. Why do I want to be on the beach writing? What inside of me drives me towards a specific lifestyle? Why do I want a large audience and readership base?

Ultimately it’s because I want to be HUGE, larger than life. I want to create the type of leverage where I can offer as much value to the world as possible. To create change in others through advice, writing, speaking, and LIVING by example.

This one is big. Now it opens the doors to my entire life, and EVERYTHING I do.

So now, as I sit here looking at the room around me, and the tasks I have at hand, how can I move towards becoming that paragon role model?

I open the door to my refrigerator. To the left is some old pizza, to the right, fresh fruit and some grass fed venison sausage. When I’m connected to this higher purpose, the choice is easy. Eating healthy and staying in shape will not only serve as creating a lifestyle where I can lead by example, it will also keep me mentally focused and more productive.

I’m at the mall looking at purchasing a new shirt. Could this money be better spent on marketing for my brand? Does the shirt look professional, could I wear it onstage? Or could I buy a plane ticket to Las Vegas, create some amazing stories and teach what I learned from the experience?

If I’m reading RSDNation, it’s to find new content, and figure out better ways to answer recurring questions. If I’m on Facebook, I’m looking at competitors to see how they are marketing to their customer base. If I’m on an internet marketing forum, I’m trying to sniff out new ways to increase traffic to my sites and better optimize conversions.

Girls, Girls, Girls

I’ll get emails from guys saying I write too much about the lifestyle, neglecting the success with girls material. They freak out because I’ll talk self development, not the proper angle to approach a girl or how to deal with a bad text message. It’s because, contrary to how it might appear, my life does not revolve around picking up women.

I want it all…

And there doesn’t need to be conflict between your priorities to excel in EVERY area of life. It’s all synergistic. Your career moves you towards your dating life, which moves you towards your physical health, which moves you towards your emotional health, and back and forth and cross connecting to move you towards becoming the ultimate man.

Ask Yourself…

Why are you here?

Is it because you are trying to get back at your ex girlfriend, trying to get a hotter girl? Are you making up for an isolated childhood, and you think if you have 3 girlfriends then you’ll finally be accepted by the “cool kids?”

You might be at work, feeling underutilized and just randomly checking websites to pass the time. You might be living in a shitty apartment with roommates you hate, and this is your break from reality.

Or you might be living a great life, and trying to take it one step further. You might be completely happy, or a good friend, and read this just to enjoy seeing me do what I do.

Whatever the reason, don’t stop there, peel away the layers of meaning and view things from a broader perspective.

Connect with your higher purpose, steer the rudder of life towards your destination, and start living through THAT filter as opposed to a disjointed myopic view of the world.

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.
-Henry David Thoreau

That desperation comes from a disconnect between a higher purpose and your actions.

In everything you do, live life to the fullest.

You’ll notice that your actions and thoughts will take on new meaning.  You’ll live life with more passion and motivation.  You’ll be magnetic to the people around you, and the value you offer others will give you wealth beyond financial success, but true happiness.

Well, I’m reading because I know your writings are excellent, and because opening direct like you taught on bootcamp is starting to open lots of doors for me, and because your word vomiting articles plus late-night text helped me have sex with my first club cold approach girl on Sunday. So I’d say I’m looking for tidbits that apply to me, while also supporting your writings and telling people about you in the Houston pickup community. And, I steal alot of your music ideas (although pandora has been awesome for me lately).

Sweet! Keep spreading the word and congrats! But… Why do you want the girls?! Why the girls?! Go a level deeper. ;P

Ohhhhhhh! Lol. I would say it’s a combination of things. First, I love hooking up with new cute girls maybe more than I love anything else on the planet besides oxygen. Second, I had a dark religious childhood and as you can imagine that was like a fat dude being denied cake for two decades (including college, long story). Third, at least the way you and Tyler teach it, you’ve gotta be a positive guy to get hot girls and the more positive I am, the cuter the girls that are interested in me, which in turn helps me be more positive, until all of a sudden I’m so grateful for everything in my life that I’m like a positivity superhero and I end up with Jessica Alba (that last part has not been field tested).

Powerful article here. I really enjoyed the zooming out more and more bit. Gaining that larger perspective in life and piling away from ‘the little me’ in life allows us to create our lives from a deeper and more significant place. I loved it.

I absolutely love it! it make things more clear for sure…i was thinking about your question and basically my answer is that i want to live and as you said kind of helping and lead by example people regarding how awesome and fun life can be! and not living life in depression and just exist in this world like most people are living their day to day life….

but actually i’m in a big dilema right now, i’m at a point in life , that all my peer groups and friends are about to go study for degree, most of them not for the right reason…
for me i just want to live awesome and fun life which include passive income from different businesses such as IM, Stocks and real estate and having tons of fun including surfing, traveling and much more..
i’m trying to ask myself every day, how would i feel before i’m about to die if i knew i didn’t have a degree that i’ll feel smart for doing it :) , and to tell you the truth, i really don’t know! this is might be the biggest dilemma i had so far in my life…would be great to hear your thoughts about it !

ohh and keep with this all lifestyle, self development moving towards blog, i absolutely love it! those are new stuff i never seen before , while all the pickup articles a newbie need is really already in your archives…so people just need to implement what they read more and understand they are fucking enough to begin with….

keep the good shit going ! love your stuff!

Yeah, that is always a tough question. I went to school for a long time, got my MS in microbiology, and even though I didn’t directly use it, a lot of the skills I utilize today I picked up through going to college. I think it’s a good foundation to get a degree, just go for something you enjoy, making it easy to get As. Don’t worry about how you will use your degree because 70% of people never do what they went to school for.

And college is damn FUN! College girls… MMM….

Nice…your mind is very valuable…introspection at its finest…and you balance the exterior with the deep interior which is definitely the key…I have no doubt that you will become whatever you set out to become…or maybe you will never become whatever you ideally want to become because i guess its a never ending process…but in that case i have no doubt that you will become “more” than what most people will ever dare to dream of becoming…passion—it’s what i live for…i respect anyone who is passionate about all aspects of their life and their craft… two dope quotes i re-read recently that blow my mind to shit (this was supposedly written in a 1917 book…idk…either way dude was wayyyyy ahead of his time) …don’t know if this applies, don’t care…enjoy…”Always will I strive to be greater than I am. I must SURPASS MYSELF. In each successive act, test, encounter, thought. I will be GREATER than in the one previous. I am what I am now, but in an hour I must be MORE than I am now. In everything must I exert more power to surpass myself.”….’“From now on I vow I will try to act the part of a person TEN TIMES bigger than I am now, for by so doing, I construct greater powers in my own brain which will actually build me into such a leader. I refuse to longer be confined by the shadowy walls which heretofore have cramped me into a narrow sphere. From this day forth the word ‘limit’ is banished from my mind.”

Great post, Brad. I read your articles cause I just got my degree in literature and now I’m asking myself what I can do with it. I’d love to write like you on the internet even if I would only earn 300$ a month, but my family wants that I go to medical school to study another 6-7 years. I feel really bad this period and was searching for some tips I can use to make a decision soon. Looking backwards would you make everything again and arent you afraid that in 20years you dont wanna seduce girls anymore and prefer to spent your week-ends with your wife and your kids? After you got your degree wherent you afraid of your future or that your pickup buisness could fail?

Thx man

I was really close to going that route. After I finished my Masters and started looking for jobs it definitely was annoying with the constant rejections, not even hearing back from job interviews…

But looking back, now I’m glad I did it all. School is definitely not a waste, but you can’t look at it specifically like I’m going for SCIENCE, or LITERATURE. It’s more, what are the skill sets you can learn from that?

How to become a better writer, how to work with a team… Things like that, that apply to any job.

Then once I started working for RSD, it wasn’t like, “I need to decide if I want to be a pick up coach for the rest of my life!” It’s more the skills that I learn. Traveling, organizing seminars, public speaking, these traits will fill my resume in a good way. (Not that I ever plan on needing a resume.)

So look for something that is going to build out your tool box to make you unique down the road for either your own business or as an indespensible tool for someone elses.

Excellent post. Came at just the right time for me. I was asking myself these questions, but to have them fully elucidated like you just did, makes answering them even easier.

So why am I doing what I do? To remember what I am capable of, to rise to the challenge and overcome it. Not to prove to myself or anyone else that I can, but because it is there, and by doing so, not settling for the life that so many others sadly settle for.

That’s the depest motivation I can find. Thanks!

Hey Brad.

Question here. Like reading your blog. I notice a common thread in your experiences with your “success” in life and the such. I read in alot of self help books where the mention something along the lines that: Your relationship towards how well you feel about life and the things around you will determine how well you do in life.” Might not be an exact quote but you get the idea.

Generally how you feel (deserving or not) in relation to the world around you. Girls, money, friends, experiences, etc, etc. Determines your outcome of a successful life. Do you feel some of these positive experiences you have have (teaching, the mentors you’ve had, etc, etc.), had been contributed to you just feeling overall adequate/deserving/worthy of the positive experiences that seem to happen for you?

I know, a nerdy self help analytically question. Thanks for taking the time.

Reply

    Brad Branson

Yeah, definitely. I don’t believe in the whole “The Secret” type of mentality, but what happens when you focus on the good, and the possibilities, your RAS picks up on those things. It’s all how you view your reality and the questions you ask yourself.

If you constantly think, “Why did this happen to me?” All you will do is come up with reasons to confirm you are a victim.

But if you ask yourself, “How can I make my life MORE awesome?” It already presupposes that your life is awesome, and your focus stays on the positive and finds ways to make your life more awesome.

Just choose to be awesome, view your life as awesome, and it will only grow stronger…

What I think is even more interesting is you’ll be exactly where you’re suppose to be at that particular stage in life until you process and go through those emotional and psychological barriers that’s preventing you from reaching the “next step.” It’s those success barriers/limiting beliefs that prevent you from possibly reaching the next level you know makes logical sense you could be and should be operating at..

Owen mentioned something in BP that still sticks about having dominion over your own mind. This idea I was glad to see elaborated upon further in Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Having the ability to focus for extended periods of time without loosing concentration. It’s almost a duty of ours.

lol, maybe i’m just rambling… it made sense in my head ;o)

      Reply

        Brad Branson

Ya, I actually tried to read flow, but the author seemed to be trying way too hard to sound smart. But I’ve only heard good things…

        Reply

Rick-

Yeah, just with the act of asking yourself why you are doing anything I believe that a person is way ahead of most , IF you know what your values are on an emotional rather than logical level. It’s also great that when I took the time to analyse these, they are all connected and if one of them completely shuts down then the whole thing is screwed. They all tie in to the bigger purpose of personal evolution.
It’s like with university I sometimes wonder why I take the time study, but then I know it will make me more evolved in terms of learning how to learn and building awesome social skills.
With success with women you have to know why you want it, for me, I just wanna have as much fun as possible before my mid 30s. So cold approach achieves that.
And then training, eating healthy and travelling all benefit from, as well as assist, the other values.
Loving the articles Brad, nice one :)

It took me awhile to read through this all because I had to keep pausing to think for so long but im glad I did… I notice that most of my progresses have been made when I get into this trance of thinking, its happend a bunch of times but only a couple like this, where each thought you know will ressonate in you. So now I have new meaning as to why Iv wanted to fill this hole inside of me for so long,

I knew I was trying to fill a void in my self that was caused by society that was recently removed but I realized through this all that the reason I truley wanted to fill the viod is because one of my values is that people should change them selves to the world and not the world to them selves, since you cant change who you are, I simply mean that one must change the way tehy act, think, live in hopes that anyone who comes into contact with them has refrence for what living really is. And iv felt this emptyness because I havent quite been developing my self enough im not taking the action I want to take and im not thinking the way I want to think. and iv been offending my own boundries and morals by doing this creating negative emotion in my self… what I need to do is relish on what im doing alredy like in tylers recent video and see reality for what it is but work towards my goals while also accepting myself.

Hey Brad,

As long as you keep posting stuff to set me on my path, it’s very probable that I keep reading it.

First and foremost I’m on this path to get laid and enjoy getting better at it. In the end, say 5 years, I want a lasting, fullfilling relationship with someone I can choose out of abundance.

Being on this path has amazing side effects, like confidence and higher social value. I think that’s why I’m addicted to it, it just makes me feel great!

Why am I here on a godforsaken Island at the moment? I need to study, to get the lifstyle I want. 4 weeks of working to get 4 weeks of awesomeness, with abundant cash.

The next time I’m doing homework, I’ll be thinking of that!

I like the value bringing mindset you have, I need to develop that. Cheers!

I’m actually doing an assignment for psychology class on intrinsic vs external motivation at the moment. Funny, as its very similar stuff to what you’re talking about. Intrinsic motivation involves doing something for the value it holds in itself, not because some external thing is forcing you to. Research shows that intrinsic motivation ties in with things like self esteem and self belief. Pretty interesting stuff.

P.S Talking of South Africa, I saw you did a bootcamp here a while back. Any chance you’ll be doing any more in Cape Town? :D

I want to acheive a similar mindset like yours where I think everyting I do is the shit.
Self belieif. A reality that is percieved as far fetched by others. I want to wash my hair with social unconditioner lol =) and break social rules and boundaries. A mindset so strong when beutiful women reject you, you assume they are so interested they have to hide it by playing hard to get with an iod.
I want to live!!

Bradley,

Nice read. I agree with you man. Life is about the mindset and the “style” in which you live. people forget about who they are and what truly motivates them. I’d say most of your readers, including myself, are trying to reinvent themselves to some degree. Or rather, we are trying to become more self aware on a daily basis.

Perhaps a topic you could think about writing on is taking action on the “why”. the motivation to actually say “this is what i love, and “this” is what im going to to about it, right now.” I feel like for me sometimes even my dreams arent good enough for me. or maybe im not good enough for my dreams?? haha.

I just think there are two steps, realizing the why (motivation), and then the follow through. that sounds obvious but i think an article on the “will to act” could go a long way.

Im diggin your reading music too. Have you ever heard of flying lotus?
